Why doesn’t Chattanooga FC try to enter (and qualify for) the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup this year? While we have had an extremely difficult time finding the 2010 locations and schedules online (note to administrators of thecup.us: get your act together and post it in an obvious location! AND correct that link to the Region III adult soccer… it goes to a site you don’t want your kids visiting!), it looks like the application deadline is sometime in April (based on last year’s schedule) and the qualifying games are in May and following… so it could fit with our schedule.
Why enter you ask?
- More Games – we want to see our team play more often than 4 times. Players love to play.
- Better Competition – if we advance, we can have a chance to play USL, maybe NASL(?) and – if we advance far enough – MLS teams
- Winning = more recognition – this can continue to build Chatt FC’s profile as a good team and organization, which can lead to better players trying out for our team. Losing helps to make us stronger.
- It’s in Tuscaloosa – the Region III Championship is only a 2 hr 45 min drive from here. Not bad at all.
- Not much expense – it doesn’t look like it costs much more than $250 or so plus travel… which to AL is not much.
So, CFC, are you interested? Here’s how to enter.

One restriction to consider is the number of foreign nationals on your team. I don’t remember the exact number, but the US Open Cup has strict limitations on FNs.
It will also be interesting to see what the format of the US Open Cup qualifying from Region III will be this year. Last year the winners from the 2 groups of 4 teams qualified out of the region. The teams had to play 3 games in 3 days in brutally hot weather. Hopefully, we’lll get lucky with the weather this year.
Sheldon, I figured it out…If you try and repost the link I believe the image should show up now. The website as a whole is getting there, work in progress!
I agree. We should do it and we are exploring ways of figuring that out right now. BTW, I just updated the CFC facebook page and posted a link to this blog…it doesn't bring in any images with it. You (whoever that is) should get an image somewhere on the site so that it posts it on FB.
And kudos for enabling FB connect!
oooohhh. Very nice!
You had me 'till "Tuscaloosa." That place is the armpit of Alabama.
Ouch, I am guessing El Conductor has an anti-Alabama bias… shake it off, as we are only talking about soccer here, not the SEC.
Bias aside, Tuscaloosa's a hole… really. Remember how bad Chattanooga was until the 80's. Now imagine what it'd be like if no one had cared – that's Tuscaloosa. Don't believe me? Read this: http://www2.nbc13.com/vtm/news/local/article/toxi...
Best quote of the article: "Parts of Los Angeles, Calif., and Madison County, Ill., had the highest cancer risks in the nation… They were followed by two neighborhoods in Allegheny County, Pa., and one in Tuscaloosa County, Ala."
I hope the Lamar Hunt participants like a little cancer with their soccer:
Interesting, though I doubt your sentiment about Tuscaloosa only came AFTER reading that article. And I suppose these cancer risks apply especially to people come to watch 2 or 3 soccer games over a weekend?
